— Guide
Your first tattoo — everything you need to know.
Getting your first tattoo can raise many questions. Especially with fine line tattoos — a very delicate, elegant style that is increasingly popular. This guide answers everything important so you can walk into your first tattoo with confidence. Written from the experience of Aroa and the Sinkply team.
What is a fine line tattoo?
Fine line tattoos are one of the most delicate styles in tattooing. They use very thin needles to create subtle, elegant and minimalist lines. In some cases the single needle technique is used. The key is that the result is clean, fine and well-defined.
Especially popular for words, small symbols, minimalist drawings and discreet tattoos.

Common questions before your first tattoo
If you're thinking about your first tattoo, questions like these are completely normal:
- · Does it hurt a lot?
- · Which body area should I choose?
- · How long does a fine line tattoo last?
- · What if I regret it someday?
Most of these questions are easily answered in a conversation with your tattoo artist. Every person is different, every skin reacts differently — that's why tattooing is a guided process where the studio helps you make decisions.
How to decide on a design
Two simple questions help with many decisions:
Should the tattoo be visible or discreet?
This helps choose the body area. Some prefer visible spots like the forearm or wrist, others prefer more hidden zones.
Should it have meaning or just look beautiful?
The meaning doesn't have to be literal. Many choose simple symbols that represent something personal — a small star, a flash, a line. Your artist can help you turn an abstract idea into a visual design.
Tip: try your design on a photo of your own skin in our tattoo simulator before the session.
Which body areas work best?
Fine line tattoos work well on many body areas. However, some areas may cause faster fading:

- · Forearm
- · Upper arm
- · Collarbone
- · Ankle
For your first tattoo, many start with especially discreet spots — inner upper arm, ankle, behind the bra line, or upper elbow. Most people get used to their tattoo very quickly and even forget they have it.
How long does a fine line tattoo last?
How long does the session take?
Fine line tattoos are often quick — a small letter takes about 5 minutes, a short word about 15 minutes. The exact time depends on the design, body area and skin.
How long does it last on skin?
A tattoo is meant to last forever. Over time, fine lines may widen minimally — skin is a living organ. That's why precise work from the start is critical. Free touch-ups are included with us.
What happens on tattoo day?
- 01 The design is reviewed and confirmed with you.
- 02 It's printed in different sizes to find the best fit.
- 03 A transfer is placed on the skin — you see exactly how it will look.
- 04 Position and size can still be adjusted.
- 05 Then we tattoo — and you get an aftercare guide to take home.
How does a fine line tattoo heal?
A small tattoo typically heals completely in about three weeks. During this time the skin regenerates and the tattoo stabilises. Your artist will explain exactly what to do in the studio — no need to worry.
We use transparent, vegan Second-Skin patches for the cleanest and safest healing.
Does a fine line tattoo hurt?
Most of our clients describe the feeling as very gentle — like lightly scratching the skin with a pen cap. A very superficial sensation, quite different from what many imagine with traditional tattoos.
Many clients who arrive nervous about pain say afterwards it was much easier than expected. On a scale of 1 to 10: most say 2.
What if I regret it?
Fear of regret is one of the most common concerns — but in our experience it happens far less often than people think. Tattoos with personal meaning are rarely wanted removed. And if so: modern laser technology makes it possible.
